Dialogue is Necessary and Lebanon is Committed to Taef Accords
Leader of the Democratic Gathering and Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) MP Walid Jumblat on Wednesday stressed that Lebanon is committed to the charter of Arab League as with the Taef accords.
Jumblat was asked to comment on Lebanese-Syrian relations following his meeting with President Michel Suleiman at Baabda Palace in which he replied that diplomatic relations are the best conduit for having relations between states. He explained that Lebanon is committed to the charter of Arab League as with the Taef accords saying both mechanisms provide Lebanon with special and distinguished relations.
"Next Monday the national dialogue will be held; I have spoken with the president regarding its importance…one achievement is diplomatic relations (with Syria), we shall see at the coming dialogue session on Monday how we will follow up (on this). But no doubt the principle of dialogue is important," he said.
The PSP leader said that he did not discuss topics not already covered by the national dialogue.
"The issue of annulling the Higher Lebanese-Syrian Council is a demand of ours, it won”t be up for discussion now. However, later it would be," Jumblat said.
He indicated that all bilateral agreements with Syria would be revised in a manner that safeguards Lebanese sovereignty saying :" However, I believe this would take place later."
He expressed his appreciation to Russia for its decision to provide Lebanon with ten MiG 29 fighters.
