Parliament elects Half Constitutional Council
The Lebanese Parliament on Friday elected five members for the constitutional council, setting the stage for forming the 10-seat highest constitutional court.
The March 14 majority alliance succeeded in voting in the three Christian members for the council: Maronite Antoine Kheir, Roman Catholic Antoine Msarra and Greek Orthodox Zaghloul al-Atiyeh.
The Sunni and Shiite Muslim members, respectively Tareq Zyadeh and Ahmed Taqieddine were elected as a result of consensus agreement between house members.
The cabinet is to elect five members to the council, allowing the highest constitutional court to be operational prior to the forthcoming elections.
The constitutional council is the only body that has the power to look into complaints related to election fraud and challenging results.
