Despite Difficulties in Implementing 1701, More Efforts Need To Be Made

The United Nations Special Coordinator to Lebanon Michael Williams said, after meeting with President Michel Sleiman on Thursday in Baabda, that they discussed a number of issues including the Lebanese national dialogues which will resume on 22 December.

He affirmed the UN’s support for this dialogue and emphasized the importance of continuing this process irrespective of any disagreements that may inevitably arise.

“I also indicated that the United Nations stands ready to assist when required,” he said.

He added that despite the progress made in the implementation of Resolution 1701, more efforts and procedures need to be taken. He said that President Sleiman reconfirmed Lebanon’s commitment to the resolution.

Williams encouraged both Lebanon and Israel to commit to the resolution.

He also said that the discussions included the relations between Lebanon and Syria.

“The UN looks forward to the historic exchange of embassies and ambassadors between the two countries as soon as possible. We welcome the improved coordination on a number of other issues. We hope to see progress achieved concerning the borders demarcation and the fate of the missing people,” he said.
