Finalising Judicial Appointments Is “Exceptional”
Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar expressed his delight that the cabinet had appointed on Saturday the leaders of the Court of Cassation, the Higher Judiciary Council and the Shura Council.
In an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio on Sunday, Najjar said that finalizing the judicial appointments was “extraordinary and important in light of the factions in the cabinet and their contradictory interests.”
“I think that the president has mastered the art of reducing disputes that may lead to a further widening of political differences,” he said.
Parliament elected five of the ten members of the Constitutional Council and the cabinet is to appoint the remaining five members.
Najjar said, “The time between the parliamentary discussions and the cabinet session was only 48 hours and this period of time was not enough to discuss all the candidates.”
He said that adjourning the appointment of the judges until the next cabinet session “intends to give the different parties more time to reach a solution.”
