Rockets Are a Violation Of 1701
The National Liberal Party (NLP) on Friday reaffirmed its belief in the need for a Lebanese-Syrian border demarcation, including along the Shebaa Farms area. The party also called for a serious initiative to force Palestinian organizations loyal to Damascus to stop the flow of weapons, insurgents and terrorists into Lebanon.
After a weekly meeting headed by party leader Dory Chamoun, the NLP issued a statement in which it also demanded the missing persons and detainees dossier be settled and both direct and indirect Syrian interference in Lebanese affairs be ended. “It is crucial to resolve outstanding issues and not fall into the trap of distraction posed by diplomatic exchange,” the statement read.
“How long has Lebanon been a prisoner of issues and ideologies at the service of the highest bidders, even as we hear the Syrian president”s calls for direct negotiations with Israel and the demarcation of a border?”
The NLP said the discovery of Katyusha rockets in South Lebanon on Friday in an area under the control of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reflected the challenges and dangers still looming over Lebanon.
“Regardless of who stands behind it, the message is a flagrant violation of [UN Security Council] resolution 1701 and reveals hostile intentions towards stability, security and safety,” the party said.
