True Accountability Will Occur During 2009 Elections
Future bloc MP Michel Pharaoun said that political division had entered the national unity cabinet and it could no longer be called by that name, especially as it was not possible to hold the cabinet accountable. “Discussions without accountability [demonstrates] a deficiency in practicing democracy,” he said.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily al-Seyassah on Saturday, Pharaoun said that true accountability would occur during the 2009 parliamentary elections, based on national principles beginning with the Taif Accord, the Doha Agreement, national dialogue decisions, UNSCR’s and the defense strategy. Pharaoun also asked how Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could request a demarcation of the border in the Golan Heights while refusing to demarcate the border in the Shebaa Farms.
Pharaoun said that March 14 MPs had acted according to their national responsibilities by electing members to the Constitutional Council. He compared this to the response of March 8 members who threatened to using their “obstructing third” power in the cabinet when selecting members of the Election Monitoring Committee last week.
Pharaoun said that he would run in the 2009 parliamentary elections, adding that the March 14 alliance’s list of candidates would not be complete until it announced its political program.
