Saniora: If Israel Attacks it Would Find Lebanon United

Prime Minister Fouad Saniora said that what concerns him is preventing Israel from being lead to attacking Lebanon. He pointed that if Israel were to attack it would find Lebanon united as a single man.

Following a wide meeting on Monday at Baabda palace with visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Saniora said: "Lebanese awareness is great, everyone understands that it would benefit no one to drag Lebanon into any confrontations of any kind."

Saniora considered Israel to always be sly and builds on creating excuses and means for causing trouble.

"Government is very aware and is making all necessary communications to avoid falling into any trap by Israel," Saniora said.

The prime minister said there should be a direct cease-fire in Gaza, he called for opening all crossings into the strip coupled with the resumption of the 2005 agreement governing the crossings.

"Any action (taken) should end up in establishing a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank in a connected and viable manner," Saniora said.

"We should never fall into the Israeli trap. (Israel)..Wants further divisions," the prime minister explained to reporters.

He was asked to comment on the recent demonstrations against the Egyptian and U.S. embassies in Lebanon in which he said: "demonstrating against the Egyptian embassy is very harmful."

"The message is better carried across better as long as the demonstration is peaceful and civilized," he said.

Regarding Sarkozy”s position of Lebanese-Syrian relations Saniora said: "all the steps taken so far are in the right direction. President Sarkozy is aware to all issues, and to the method we are following and he supports that at the same time."
