UN force in south Lebanon on alert: French official
The UN force in south Lebanon went on alert footing on Thursday after rockets were fired at Israel from the zone, a French military official said.
All units of the UN force, known as UNIFIL, were deployed cross the zone of responsibility to try to prevent further rocket attacks, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "UNIFIL is in a state of heightened alert since 8:05 local time this morning," he said.
The goal is to "strictly control and thwart all possibility of new rocket firings," he added. The official said two rockets were fired early Thursday near the town of Shama and that these were immediately detected by Cobra radars deployed by UNIFIL”s French contingent.
Several rockets slammed into northern Israel from Lebanon on Thursday with the army returning fire, as the Jewish state entered the 13th day of a massive offensive on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
