New York Times proffers Beirut as prime destination

Beirut has been named as one of the "44 places to go in 2009" by the New York Times, one of the world”s most influential newspapers.

The daily included the Lebanese capital on its annual list of the best travel destinations for its readers, which appeared on Sunday.

"With a recent [though perhaps tenuous] detente keeping the violence in check, the capital of Lebanon is poised to reclaim its title as the Paris of the Middle East," Beirut”s entry on the list said.

The feature said that "two hotels scheduled to open later this year are raising the luxury quotient." It also paid tribute to Lebanon”s famous cuisine. "A clutch of high-profile restaurants are transforming the city”s culinary scene," the article said.

The locations were chosen on a range of criteria, including architecture, cultural attractions and food.

Beirut”s inclusion on the list was welcomed by Lebanese expatriates in the States. "I feel proud since I am a Lebanese residing in the US to see that Beirut is the number one listed place," wrote one Lebanese on an online discussion board linked to the article.
