Hezbollah’s reasoning surpassed the government’s prerogative
Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel has underlined the need for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701 in order to avoid reigniting tension in South Lebanon and to protect the international forces deployed at the Lebanese-Israeli border.
After meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s personal representative in Lebanon, Michael Williams, and Gemayel highlighted the need for Lebanon to do its best to show diplomatic and political support for the people of Gaza.
Gemayel, a former president, also underlined the need to preserve security in Lebanon, particularly as the country was at the threshold of parliamentary elections.
On a neutral parliamentary bloc, Gemayel said, “Heresy is not the formation of a neutral bloc, but to object to it and prevent citizens from voting for whomever they want.”
“A lot of Lebanese are unconvinced by either March 14 or March 8 and have the right to vote for a third option, for it is possible to stabilize the democratic process with a neutral bloc,” he said.
And on the national defense strategy, Gemayel drew attention to the fact that Hezbollah’s actions proved they were”against the logic of the state.”
“We saw what the strategy of resistance did in Gaza,” he added.
Williams in turn added his voice to the call for the implementation of UNSCR 1701, adding his hope that parliamentary elections in Lebanon would be held in a transparent and democratic means.
