Russia “Deeply Worried” About Situation in the South
Russian Ambassador Sergei Bukin told Premier Fouad Saniora on Friday that his country was "deeply worried" about the deteriorating situation in south Lebanon.
"I expressed Russia”s huge and deep worries about the dangers of the deterioration of the security situation between Lebanon and Israel," Bukin said after talks with Saniora at the Grand Serail.
"We believe that the eruption of any clashes between Lebanon and Israel are not useful either for Israel or for Lebanon," he said.
Bukin said his country backed Lebanese efforts to prevent the outbreak of new clashes between the two countries.
Asked if there is a Russian initiative to stop the Israeli war on Gaza, Bukin said: "We backed Resolution 1860 and Russia is a member of the Quartet and the Security Council. It is active in Middle East issues and all efforts that would lead to a comprehensive settlement."
