Strict Security Measures Around U.S. Embassy in Awkar
Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces strengthened security measures around the vicinity of the U.S. embassy at Awkar as a pre-caution against any possible sabotage.
Roads leading to Awkar square turned into a security zone following the deployment of army internal security units in the area following the announcement of a new anti- U.S. demonstration.
Security measures began to take place from 10: 00 am on Friday morning as barbed wire was placed along the way leading to the embassy; streets were cut via metal obstacles from the Dbayie highway.
Vehicles were barred from entering the vicinity.
Residents were forced to walk; shop owners closed fearing violence or damage to their property.
Protestors were supposed to reach Awkar square by 11:00 am but none appeared.
Anti-U.S. demonstrations have become a regular scene outside the U.S. embassy since the beginning of the Israeli “Cast Lead” military operation against Gaza.
Some protests included confrontations with police.
