Lebanon’s Parliamentary Elections Crucial

March 14 General Secretariat coordinator and former MP Fares Soueid said Lebanon’s major issue was the pivotal parliamentary elections.

Soueid said the political dispute in Lebanon was over the nature of the state. The March 14 forces were also fighting for the implementation of administrative decentralization as stipulated in the Lebanese constitution, he added.

Hezbollah was demanding that Lebanon turn into a state for the Resistance and that its children could be martyred, Soueid said in a statement issued Friday. “This is based on the theory that even if all Arab fronts are closed and all countries enter into peace agreements with Israel, even if Hezbollah is negotiating with Israel directly or indirectly, Lebanon should remain in a function of combat against the Israeli enemy,” he said.

The upcoming parliamentary elections were particularly important “because if the other team wins, it will impose its view of Lebanon politically and culturally and in the Arab-Israeli conflict,” the former MP said. Soueid also cited statements made by Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qasim in June 2007.

“The preparations for the elections are classic preparations… We need to mobilize all our energies in the March 14 alliance,” he concluded.
