The President Is the Arbitrator, Should Not Be Drawn Into Political Disputes
Lebanese Forces MP Georges Adwan called on all Lebanese citizens and officials not to involve the president in any political dispute.
“The president does not campaign for the candidates in the coming parliamentary elections. I heard from him that his role is to sponsor the institutions and ensure transparent and free elections,” Adwan said, after meeting with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir in Bkirki on Sunday.
However, after the elections, Adwan said, an elected member of parliament has right to side or not to side with the president, which is the MP’s concern, not the president’s.
Adwan said he hoped the coming parliamentary elections would result in a majority and a minority so that the former rules and the latter opposes. “If we become majority, we rule alone and if we become minority we will oppose alone. We will not participate in this democratic heresy [in reference to the national unity cabinet].”
Adwan said that Defense Minister Elias Murr should first discuss, during his expected visit to Damascus, the issue of Palestinian weapons outside of the refugee camps. He added that in this regard, the Syrians, who he said were linked to the weapons, should help the Lebanese state implement the decisions taken during the national dialogue. Murr should then discuss the demarcation of Lebanese-Syrian borders beginning with Shebaa Farms, Adwan said.
Adwan also revealed that the Lebanese Forces would name retired General Wehbe Qaticha as its representative to the military committee that will be formed by the national dialogue to discuss the defense strategy.
