Baroud Says Law Allows Intercepting Phone Calls, does not permit bugging
Interior Minister Ziad Baroud on Friday set the end of February a deadline to issuing identity cards to those who completed the age of 21 allowing them to vote in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
Baroud, addressing a press conference, said his ministry is interested in facilitating the elections and urged all political factions to be keen on providing the needed stability to allow transparent voting.
He also said Lebanese law "allows intercepting telephone calls in line with a judicial order, but does not permit bugging of calls."
"The interior ministry, in cooperation with the ministry of telecommunications, is interested in setting up a legal department to intercept calls upon legal permission from the judicial authority," Baroud said.
