Gemayel cites need to implement Resolution 1701
Phalange Party leader and former President Amin Gemayel, currently on a visit to Italy, stressed on Friday the importance of preserving stability through the proper implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which put an end to the summer 2006 war with Israel.
He called on Italian officials to help resolve the issues of the occupied Shebaa Farms and the occupied half of the Ghajar village as well as to deal with the issues of the Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons and the normalization of Lebanese-Syrian relations.
He added democracy could not be achieved with the presence of security zones and illegitimate weapons off-limit to the state. Gemayel called on the international community to be aware of "some groups” attempts to hinder the Lebanese electoral process and its transparency."
He praised President Michel Sleiman and the national institutions” "work toward building a powerful state." Gemayel met on Friday with President of the Italian Senate Renato Schifani, President of the Chamber of Deputies Gianfranco Fini and Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.
