Aoun to Escalate Tone before Elections

Lebanese Forces MP Antoine Zahra told the Free Lebanon radio station on Wednesday that the obstruction of the government’s work was noticed since the Doha Agreement was approved in May of last year.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea expressed his reservations concerning this issue in a written letter.

Zahra said those who planned for a sit-in in Beirut downtown and invaded Lebanese regions would not hesitate to use chaos to obstruct the cabinet’s work.

He also said Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun was expected to escalate the tone of his speeches until Election Day in a dire response to his dwindling political power. “This exhibits [Aoun’s] nervousness” on the results of the upcoming parliamentary elections, he explained.

Zahra expected Aoun to launch attacks against the Lebanese people on June 8, after the final count of polls would be announced.

He supported the military institution and called for protecting its authority, while accused others of setting red lines limiting the army’s work. He went on to criticize the March 8 coalition and Hezbollah’s arms, asking, “How does March 8 support the army, while another force is present?”

Zahra said Lebanese Forces relied on the military institution to assert its authority throughout the country.

He concluded that the forth commemoration of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination on February 14 had no political or electoral ends, because it paved the way to achieve independence. Zahra said March 14 would be an electoral occasion.
