EU Pledges EUR4 Million For Lebanon Vote
The European Commission has pledged EUR4 million towards the June legislative elections in Lebanon to ensure the vote proceeds in democratic fashion, a statement said Monday.
It said the money will cover technical assistance as well as the purchase of equipment needed for the June 7 elections.
The announcement came as the European Union”s commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, arrived in Lebanon for a two-day visit to meet with the country”s leaders.
Ferrero-Waldner said ahead of her visit that the polls were important for Lebanon”s democracy and that the E.U. was ready to send observers.
The elections will pit the Western-backed current majority in parliament against a Hezbollah-led alliance supported by Syria and Iran.
