Trial Begins of Abssi, 30 Other Terrorist Suspects

A military court began trial in absentia of head of Fatah al-Islam terrorist group Shaker Abssi as well as 30 other suspects involved in terrorist attacks.

Among those being tried were Abssi, two Saudis identified as Abdallah Mohammed Ahmed Bishi and Abdul Rahman Yehya Abdul Aziz as well as Haitham Abul Karim al-Saadi, a Palestinian, and Youssef Mohammed al-Hajj Dib, a Lebanese who was sentenced inLebanon in 2007 for attempting to blow up trains in Germany.

The suspects being tried in absentia are accused of setting up an armed ring with the intent to kill people and steal their money.

They are also charged with inciting murder and sabotage as well as possession of explosives and transport of unlicensed weapons.

Abssi, however, as well as defendant Muhib Abdel Ghani al-Rashid, are accused of counterfeiting passports and identity cards.

Abssi”s Fatah al-Islam fought bloody gunbattles with the Lebanese army at the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in 2007.

Abssi and several other suspects are still at large.
