We Want “Transparent” Elections in Lebanon
Middle East envoy George Mitchell stressed the Obama administration”s continued support to Lebanon”s independence, sovereignty and democracy and called for "transparent" elections on June 7.
"We back the elections in Lebanon on June 7. We want them to be peaceful and transparent. We see (the polls) an important development for Lebanon”s democracy," Mitchell told Arab and Islamic officials during a conference call organized by the White House Public Relations Office on Thursday.
He also said during the 58-minute conference that the U.S. will continue to support the Lebanese state and its institutions, particularly the army.
Mitchell said he was planning to return to the region on Monday to help push for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and for humanitarian aid to the territory”s population.
He said he will also discuss with Israeli and Palestinian officials the aftermath of the elections in Israel.
