Rocket Attack is a Challenge to National Will

President Michel Suleiman reiterated on Saturday that Lebanon should not become a platform for launching rockets and said the latest security incidents are aimed at creating instability in the country.

"South Lebanon should not be a base for launching rockets," Suleiman told his visitors at Baabda Palace, stressing that firing of rockets into Israel was "a challenge to Lebanese will."

A Lebanese army spokesman said Israel fired eight artillery shells on Saturday after two rockets were fired from a banana plantation near the village of el-Henniyeh, in the el-Qlayleh region about 10 kilometers from the border.

One of the two rockets landed in Israel and the second apparently malfunctioned and landed in Lebanon, UNIFIL spokesperson Yasmina Bouziane said.

Suleiman said the Israeli response was in violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hizbullah and criticized the Jewish State for holding the Lebanese government responsible for the rocket attack.

He urged Army Commander Gen. Jean Qahwaji and Interior Minister Ziad Baroud to take immediate measures and arrest those involved in the attack.

The president also said the latest security incidents aim at "disturbing the stable situation in Lebanon."
