South Council controversy is political
Finance Minister Mohammad Chatah told the Voice of Lebanon radio station on Monday that it was known that the Council for South controversy was not a financial issue but rather a political one.
He added that even the word “political” failed to describe it. He said that the ministerial committee formed to study national and Council for the South budgets would not hold any meetings.
Chatah also said that last week’s exchange of accusations between Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Speaker Nabih Berri did not help resolve the issue. He also regretted the criticism of Siniora’s Sunday visit to the town, where he grew up.
The minister assured that even if the state budget was not adopted, the residents of the South would be given their compensations.
