Lebanon Demands Execution for 16 Terrorist Suspects Linked to al-Qaida

Military Examining Magistrate Rashid Mizher has charged 16 suspects with plotting to carry out terrorist attacks.

The suspects, who include Lebanese, Saudis, Syrians and Palestinians, were arrested in December 2007 and referred to a military court.

If convicted, they face a possible death sentence.

Dozens of suspects have been arrested since the three-month-long fighting between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam, a terrorist group with ties to al-Qaida, in the northern Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared in the summer of 2007.

Most of those in custody are suspected of having ties to al-Qaida or Fatah al-Islam.
