U.N. Commission Interrogated Sayyed in Roumieh

The International Investigation Commission has interrogated Brig. Gen. Jamil Sayyed at Roumieh prison, the daily Al Mustaqbal said Wednesday.

Sayyed on Tuesday once again declined to confront leading Fatah al-Islam suspect Ahmed Merhi.

Merhi was arrested in an Ashrafiyeh hotel in the summer of 2007 during the fighting between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam fighters in the northern refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared only to find out later that he is a key Fatah al-Islam member.

On his transfer to The Hague, Sayyed said in a letter published by the daily As Safir on Wednesday that this had been his wish "for a long time instead of being held as political hostages."

Sayyed said he was convinced that the four detained generals, including himself, would "overcome this period and be able to get out of it (ordeal) with our heads held high."
He said "political considerations" prevent investigative magistrate Saqr Saqr from releasing the four generals.
