Majdal Anjar Road Blocked to Protest Arrest of Islamists
Residents of Majdal Anjar blocked the road connecting the western Bekka with Rachaya with burning tires to protest the arrest of Islamists on charges of involvement in the May 7, 2008 events.
The Lebanese military intervened and reopened the road following consultations with the locals.
Last May, Hizbullah seized control of west Beirut after three days of gunbattles with pro-government foes left at least 11 people killed and dozens wounded.
The fighting followed a defiant speech by Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah who said a government crackdown on a private communications network run by his group was a "declaration of war."
Critics say Hizbullah has become a "state within a state."
