Lebanese Generals Submit Request for Release

Four top Lebanese generals, in custody since 2005 for suspected involvement in the murder of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri submitted a request to investigating judge Sakr Sakr Thursday for immediate release.

Sakr will issue a ruling following deliberations with the public prosecution.

They are the former head of the presidential guard Mustafa Hamdan, security services director Jamil Sayyed, domestic security chief Ali Hajj and military intelligence chief Raymond Azar.

On Wednesday, Sakr released three of seven suspects held over the 2005 murder of f Hariri. But the judge rejected demands for the release of Sayyed and Hajj, a judicial source said.

For his part, Hajj "again refused to stand before the investigating magistrate for a face-to-face meeting with Fatah al-Islam official Ahmed Merei."

The generals were detained on suspicion of premeditated murder, attempted premeditated murder and carrying out terrorist acts.
