Syrian president is still carrying threats against Lebanon
Deputy Speaker Farid Makari said on Tuesday that the Syrian President Bachar el-Asad interview with the UAE newspaper Al-Khaleej, “carries, as usual, clear threats against Lebanon,” adding that Assad would make Lebanon pay if the Special Tribunal on the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s outcome did not serve Syria’s interests.
Makari noted that al-Asad, “is saying that Lebanon would be first to pay the price of politicizing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, only the Syrian president is aiming to protect himself in case the tribunal’s verdict was against his regime.”
Makari also said that Assad predicted the situation in Lebanon would severely deteriorate in the absence of consensus, a thing which was an implied threat to ruin Lebanon following the elections.
On the other hand he also pointed out that it is clear what, “the Syrian president meant by consensus, it is to continue the obstruction of the Lebanese governing process, a thing that paralyzed the country. Assad frankly threatened and said that if the March 14 alliance does not give the obstructing third vote to the March 8 coalition, Syria will sabotage the situation in Lebanon and revert to the May 7 events.”
