Suleiman Says Only Political Will Can Disrupt Polls
President Michel Suleiman said Tuesday that a recent spate of security breaches were not enough to disable upcoming legislative elections, adding that any disruption could only emanate from a political intention "to create havoc."
"The elections represent only one stop in a political journey. They do not represent the end of the road," Suleiman told a conference on National Accord and Anti-Sectarianism.
"Whatever single-handed and isolated skirmishes have been taking place is not enough to cause a suspension of the polls," he said.
The elections can "only be disrupted if any major political side was intent on creating havoc," Suleiman added.
Maintaining a tone of optimism, Suleiman described the elections as "a democratic means of competition to benefit the homeland and the citizen.
"We go to the elections willingly and filled with enthusiasm and joy," he said.
"Failure does not mean the end of the world. And victory does not mean a free pass to abuse others," the president warned.
Suleiman said the Lebanese should benefit from the "positive" winds of change taking place in "surrounding atmospheres" in order to ensure Lebanon”s stability and security.
