Chamoun hopes Berri will not be reelected

National Liberal Party (NLP) leader Dory Chamoun said in an interview with Ash-Sharq newspaper published on Monday he hoped Speaker Nabih Berri would not be reelected, because "those who allow themselves to put the Parliament”s key in their pocket for over a year should not be reelected."

Chamoun confirmed he would run for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Chouf on the March 14 alliance”s list and would forge an alliance with Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt in southern Metn, a reference to the Baabda district.

He added that if the opposition won the elections under the leadership of Hizbullah, it would attempt to create an Islamic republic. He said it would also ensure that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun would be the next president, "something which consequently means Lebanon will establish alliances with Syria and Iran." He called for giving the state the sole authority to make war-and-peace decisions. He said Saudi Arabia was trying to bring Syria into "the Arab wing instead of the Iranian one."
