Aoun is a seeks return of Syrian hegemony to Achrafieh
Democratic Gathering bloc MP Marwan Hamadeh said that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun’s disapproval of Nayla Tueni’s candidacy for the Greek Orthodox parliamentary seat in Achrafieh in the upcoming parliamentary elections was suspicious.
In an interview with the Future News website on Tuesday, Hamadeh said that “General Aoun wants to put an end to the political and cultural heritage of Gebran Tueni, and at the same time wants Syrian hegemony to return to Achrafieh.”
“Aoun and his supporters will be kicked out of Metn and banned from Achrafieh, especially since Nayla Tueni is qualified for the job and does not need the acknowledgment of failed officers.”
Aoun did not find a seat for his candidate in Marjayoun after the Syrians forced him to accept Syrian Social Nationalist Party MP Assad Hardane, Hamadeh said.
He said that the electoral program launched by the March 14 alliance “summarizes the four-year-march that achieved the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the election of a consensus president and established diplomatic relations between Syria and Lebanon.”
“We have not yet achieved all the goals for which Kamal Jumblatt and former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri were martyred,” he told reporters.
The March 14 alliance “has pledged to run in all of Lebanon based on a joint program that emphasizes preservation of the state’s authority, protecting Lebanon from Israeli aggression and assuring that our democratic system and the Taif Accord are the basis of the constitution,” he said.
The alliance’s election nominations “were nearly complete and would gradually be announced, and “the alliance and some neutral candidates who support state authority would win the elections,” Hamadeh added.
Discussing the possibility that the May events may reoccur in Beirut and Mount Lebanon if the March 8 coalition did not win the elections, Hamadeh said that “these forces cannot go back to the same method of using weapons domestically, because it was not to their advantage. Instead they will exert pressure to form a national unity government and retain the obstructing third vote.”
