NLP calls for comprehensive electoral reform

The National Liberal Party on Friday announced that, while it supported lowering the voting age to 18, electoral reform should not be fragmented and instead should be proposed as a comprehensive package.

The electoral law remained central to true reform, the party said in a statement.

The NLP statement questioned the “rationale and reasons behind the urgent amendment of the constitution to lower the voting age just weeks before the end of the mandate of the House of Parliament,” especially as it was impossible to implement the amendment in the 2009 elections.

The statement called for comprehensive reform under the mandate of the next parliament, including granting Lebanese expatriates the right to vote in embassies or consulates.

The NLP also lauded the March 14 alliance’s 2009 political platform, which the coalition launched earlier this month.

The statement concluded by lauding the support France had expressed for Lebanon’s during President Michel Sleiman’s visit earlier this week.
