Unified March 14 electoral list within weeks
Lebanese Forces deputy leader MP George Adwan described the model of the current cabinet as a “catastrophe” and rejected repeating this model in the future.
Adwan confirmed that a unified list of March 14 alliance candidates would be announced within two weeks and he denied that any differences existed between the Lebanese Forces and the Kataeb party.
In an interview with ad-Diyar newspaper published on Sunday, Adwan said that bad relations between Syria and Lebanon were not in Lebanon’s interests, adding that “reaching a fair solution, in line with the Arab Peace Initiative, would be a big favor for Lebanon.”
Adwan slammed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s call for Hezbollah to hold negotiations with Israel, saying that “the state is the party that should hold negotiations and such a proposal is not in Hezbollah’s or the Lebanese state’s interests.”
Adwan welcomed inter-Arab rapprochements and said they provided Lebanon with further support and helped ease domestic tensions.
He said the Lebanese Forces respected Hezbollah’s right not to recognize Israel; however, he added that the party should not be an entity that is separate from the Lebanese state.
“We would be the last country to sign a peace agreement with the Israelis after the Palestinians return to their land. It is their sacred right,” he said.
With regard to domestic issues, Adwan said, “inter-Christian reconciliation is essential and necessary.”
“We are ready to end differences at any time and we have informed President [Michel] Sleiman, Marada Movement leader [Sleiman Franjieh], Bkerki and the Maronite League,” he said.
