Central Bank Appointments Take a Step Forward
Lebanese media reported on Tuesday that the issue of appointing the five deputy heads of the Central Bank might be discussed at the next cabinet session on Thursday.
The daily An-Nahar said there is a possibility that the issue will be put forward on Thursday or at a session in the very near future.
Al-Mustaqbal newspaper also reported that, amidst calls from various political entities to initiate an atmosphere of calm in Lebanese politics, issues such as the Central Bank appointments and other sticking points would be discussed at Thursday”s session.
Al-Mustaqbal suggested that the 2009 state budget controversy could witness positive developments. Additionally, the pan-Arab daily Al Hayat reported on Monday that, despite continuing disagreements surrounding allocation of funds, there exists a general understanding between Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Fouad Saniora that might translate into the issue”s appearance at Thursday”s meeting.
