Illegitimate arms raise security concerns ahead of elections

Coordinator of the March 14 General Secretariat Fares Soueid told the Voice of Lebanon radio station on Wednesday that the March 14 alliance was constantly raising the security issue even before the forthcoming parliamentary elections, especially since there were weapons illegally present outside state control.

He added that the bomb found outside Kataeb party leader Amin Gemayel’s house Tuesday night in Bikfaya was a clear message “to an alliance leader that the elections in the Metn district are under surveillance.” Soueid called for finding who was responsible for this bomb to prevent the repetition of such incidents.

Soueid denied any disagreements among the parties of March 14 and announced that a political meeting would be held in Jbeil on March 29 to launch the alliance’s electoral campaign, adding that he would run in Jbeil in the elections.

He also said that the appointment of new Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel Karim Ali was a victory for the Cedar Revolution and called for reassessing the Syrian Lebanese Higher Council’s role.

“We hope that the Syrian regime will find consensus over its territories, instead of addressing the situation in Lebanon. We also hope it will not intervene in our political system, which is based on the Taif Accord,” he concluded.
