Hariri from Brussels: EU to Send Observers to Monitor Lebanon Elections
Mustaqbal Movement leader Saad Hariri said from Brussels that the European Union will send observers to monitor the upcoming elections in Lebanon.
Hariri”s remarks came following a meeting on Thursday with EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner at the commission”s headquarters in Belgium. Hariri also met Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
He said Waldner confirmed that European observers would be dispatched to Lebanon to monitor the election process.
Hariri described as a "positive step" EU openness toward Syria "which contributes to putting matters on the right track."
He thanked Waldner for EU”s support for the international tribunal, the Paris-3 Conference and the reconstruction of the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon.
Hariri said the region can no longer afford wars, warning that "peace is getting out of hand."
The Mustaqbal Movement leader wound up a three-day visit to London on Thursday before heading to Belgium.
