Unity and respect a must among Christians

Nayla Tueni, a candidate for the Greek Orthodox seat in the Beirut I electoral district and daughter of slain Gibran Tueni, said that “the upcoming parliamentary elections would be tough and decisive.”

During a meeting with a delegation from Achrafieh on Monday, Tueni urged Lebanon’s Christians to unite, “because the Christian ranks should not stay apart… and all parties should respect each other despite their political differences.”

She added, “We should learn from the mistakes of the past to build a future for the coming generations.”

Tueni also said, “We do not want to go back to the period of Syrian hegemony, and we should stand firmly to confront such attempts.”

“Lebanese can defend itself from foreign intervention, and I want to keep your voice heard through my membership in parliament. I will work to achieve all your demands and aspirations.”

In an indirect response to Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun’s advice urging Tueni to reconsider her candidacy, she said, “All the politicians began their career at an early age, and every person has the right to run in the elections.

“Before they attack us, they should ask us what we can do to improve Lebanon and its conditions.”
