Violation of Lebanese laws one thing, Underestimating Egyptian sovereignty another

Former Shia Mufti of Tyre and Jabal Amel Sayyed Ali al-Amin said on Tuesday that Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah could not decide on his own the best way to help the Palestinians and save them from their ordeals.

In an interview with As-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Tuesday, Amin noted that Hezbollah’s actions were based on Iranian decisions and the discovery of a Hezbollah cell in Egypt was not in the interests of the Lebanese party, which he said had lost credibility in Egypt and the Arab world.

Amin said the operation Hezbollah was carrying out in Egypt was a violation of the state’s sovereignty and he noted that states were free to safeguard the security of their people.

“We object to any Lebanese or non-Lebanese party interfering in the affairs of other states,” he said.

“If Hezbollah is able to surpass Lebanese laws with the power of its arms, other states respect their sovereignty and know how to maintain it,” he said. Amin stated that Hezbollah wanted to support Hamas because it had not been able to open a front in South Lebanon to defend the Gaza Strip and its people during the three-week Israeli offensive.

Amin concluded that Hezbollah’s approach did not reflect that of the whole Shia community, adding that the Lebanese would express their rejection to the establishment of a state-within-state during the upcoming elections.
