USAID Allocates $1.7 Million to Back Electoral Process
Interior Minister Ziad Baroud signed Tuesday an agreement with USAID for a $1.7 million-grant to help finance electoral process.
The signing ceremony between Baroud and USAID representative Denise A. Herbol was attended by U.S. Ambassador Michele Sison, who reiterated her country”s support for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
She said the interior ministry played a "pivotal" role in ensuring the success of the electoral process. The ministry faces responsibilities in several fields, she added, including "voters” registration, the selection of candidates, overseeing Lebanese and international monitoring delegations in addition to counting the votes."
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy said the grant will be made to the ministry in installments via USAID”s partner organization, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.
