Illegitimate weapons used to cover up violations of the law

MP Jawad Boulos on Wednesday denied that Monday morning’s deadly ambush on Lebanese soldiers in the Bekaa valley was a result of poverty and deprivation in the region.

“Illegitimate weapons are being used to cover up violations of the law to protect personal interests,” he told LBC, calling for arms to be restricted to legitimate military institutions.

“Hezbollah’s weapons are just a slogan. It does not aim only to resist Israel and liberate the Occupied Territories. Its goal is to ensure political gains, similar to those of the May 7 events,” he said.

Boulos said the Free Patriotic Movement had defended Hezbollah’s weapons in its defense strategy proposal as it called for arms to be distributed throughout the country with the purpose of confronting any Israeli offensive against Lebanon.

He added that state should assert its authority throughout the country “or else it will no longer be called a state.”

“We hope that the opposition, including Hezbollah, will affirm that the Lebanese army should have the sole authority and right to use force,” he noted.

The Hezbollah cell discovered in Egypt is considered a violation of Egyptian laws and the Lebanese charter, he said.

Boulos confirmed the March 14 alliance aimed to form electoral list that would pave the way for its victory. “We do not intend to exclude MP Samir Franjieh from Zgharta,” he added.

There will be an electoral battle in Zgharta because the circumstances differ from the 2005 elections, he continued.
