Germany to press Israel on cluster bomb maps

German Ambassador to Lebanon Birgitta Siefker-Eberle said Thursday that her country would make diplomatic efforts to urge Israel to provide Lebanon with the maps of cluster bomb strike sites from the summer 2006 war.

Siefker-Eberle spoke during a tour of South Lebanon Thursday. She visited the Lebanese army barracks in Nabatiyeh and was received by president of the Lebanese Mines Advisory Group (MAG) Colonel Mohammad Fahmi, head of the group in the south Colonel Hassan Faqih, head of the Office of Lebanese Army Intelligence in Nabatiyeh Colonel Mohammad Shaaban and director of Mine Advisory Group Christina Bennike.

Siefker-Eberle underscored Germany”s support for demining in Lebanon and its $2.5 million contribution toward the effort. Germany helped to rebuild damaged schools, she said, adding that her country "will remain a reliable partner to make Lebanon free of mines."

She inspected Israeli ammunitions left over from the 2006 war and watched MAG members demine cluster bombs.
