Four generals release mustn’t be politically exploited
In a statement issued on Thursday, Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani voiced confidence in the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, which he said proved was “a just and non-politicized court.”
He commented on the STL’s decision to release the four generals –who were held in connection with the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri— and called for not exploiting it for political purposes. He warned against confusing politics with judiciary decisions, after smear campaigns were launched against the Lebanese judicial system by some March 8 coalition forces.
He noted that the tribunal did not seek revenge, but aimed solely to reach justice and put an end to crimes that “contradicted religious, national and humanitarian values.”
