Assaad Convoy Attacked Reports of Wounded
The head of the Lebanese Option party issued a statement on Friday accusing Hizbullah and Amal elements of attacking the party”s founder Ahmed al-Assaad during his visit to the twon of al-Taybeh in the south.
"The convoy was attacked with glass bottles, stones and with men wielding sticks and firing their gun damaging cars and wounding people," statement said.
It added that Assaad was surrounded by a mob despite attempts by the military to disperse the attackers, who cut all exits in the area.
In a press conference later in his hometown of Edaysseh, Assaad called the attack a cowardly act "however, we shall continue to move on with what we believe in. their attack means that they are weak, the polls shall show this."
He called on Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to provide him with straight answers.
"They claim to be democratic and with spreading democracy over all Lebanese territory, I call upon them to deliver all those that carried out this cowardly act," Assaad said.
He added: "We Shiites are most civilized. However, today they are falsifying out heritage and history…this has been going on since the Iranian regime entered our country…they call for faith and religion and it escapes them that faith and religion are exemplified with good manners and good behavior and not through prayers alone."
Assaad asked what is the role of the Lebanese state in bearing responsibility regarding next month”s legislative elections.
"Those that claim they are fighting Israel, are providing Israel with a free service through such acts…we call for [political] variation as an important factor for progress," he said.
