Security Council Likely to Discuss Release of 4 Generals
The U.N. Security Council will likely discuss on Thursday the political upheaval that resulted from the release of the four generals from Roumieh prison, An Nahar newspaper quoted Arab and Western diplomats as saying.
U.N. Special Envoy for the implementation of resolution 1559 Terje Roed-Larsen will brief the Council Thursday on Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon”s latest report on the implementation of the resolution.
In the report, Ban warned that Hizbullah and other armed militias are fostering instability and intimidation as parliamentary elections near.
Diplomatic sources told An Nahar that the Council could also discuss the issue of the four generals” release which helped foster deep divisions between the March 8 and 14 forces.
The sources likened the current campaigns between the two parties to accusations that preceded formation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and urged a solution to the crisis as elections date approaches.
The sources added that some Beirut-based embassies have been ordered to immediately inform their governments about any political or security development in the country.
The sources urged Ban to draw to the attention of the tribunal”s general prosecutor Daniel Bellemare and pre-trial judge Daniel Fransen that they should take into consideration the repercussions of any decision or recommendation.
