Head of EU Delegation Concerned Over Absence of Constitutional Council
The head of the EU delegation monitoring the elections expressed concern Monday over delays to appoint constitutional council members as the date of the polls draws near.
"We hope the council can be activated on time to be able to review objections filed by the candidates," Jose Ignacio Salafranca said at a press conference after his arrival in Beirut.
"The delegation will take into consideration a number of concerns when it drafts its final conclusions at the end of the electoral process," said Salafranca, who led a similar mission in the 2005 polls.
He underlined the "difficult and delicate" nature of the situation expressing hope for "a peaceful and constructive climate."
Salafranca, a lawmaker, described as "a step forward" recent amendments to the electoral law including the creation of a body to oversee the process.
