Saniora on 1st Anniversary of May7 Events Renews Rejection of Violence
Prime Minister Fouad Saniora, marking the first anniversary of the deadly May 7 events, on Thursday reiterated his rejection of violence.
"May 7 reminds us of what Beirut and some areas in the mountains and Sidon witnessed on that ill-omened day … and of the uses of violence to achieve political gains which came following sit-ins," Saniora said during the opening conference on the "impact of the global economic crisis."
"We wanted to overcome what happened on May 7. For this reason we went to Doha to sign the agreement which called for denouncing violence as means to settle disputes amongst ourselves," Saniora added.
"We agree that we only have one enemy – Israel," he went on to say. "However, attempting to achieve victories through the use of violent methods and the exercise of verbal intimidation is a loss for all Lebanese."
