Hezbollah has interest in securing Christian support for its arms
March 14 General Secretariat coordinator, Fares Soueid, told the Free Lebanon radio station on Saturday that the electoral climate would have been better if the March 14 coalition had forged an alliance with independent candidates in the Jbeil district.
“Former MP Nazem Khoury is not being firm in dealing with those who want to impose authoritarian views in Jbeil,” he said.
Soueid said he would continue his electoral battle in Jbeil, despite attempts to isolate him.
He added that Hezbollah had an interest in ensuring Christian support for its weapons, and that Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun was promoting that party’s goal.
He also said Hezbollah wanted to impose its opinion in Jbeil and to decide the electoral victors. He countered that the March 14 alliance would win the majority of parliamentary seats on June 7.
Soueid concluded the dispute between Speaker Nabih Berri and Change and Reform bloc leader Michel Aoun in the Jezzine district would have negative repercussions in other districts, such as Jbeil.
