Election Outcome to Determine Fate of Peace Talk With Israel
Diplomatic sources on Saturday told the daily An-Nahar that the outcome of the June 7 parliamentary elections, followed by the outcome of the Iranian presidential elections would work on work on forming a new image of the region for the future. This would in turn determine the outcome of any future peace talks between Lebanon and Israel, sources said.
If Iranian President Ahmadinejad is elected to a second term any peace negotiations and settlements in the region would become difficult, sources told An-Nahar.
“On the other hand, if Tehran has a new president in power, and Beirut does not see a decisive March 8 victory, peace negotiations could take a much smoother track, making a potential Palestinian-Israeli settlement possible and affect a positive outcome to the Iranian nuclear issue,” diplomatic sources said.
