Frattini for Free and Democratic Elections
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini expressed hope that the Lebanese parliamentary elections would be held in a democratic and free atmosphere.
I hope the polls are held on Sunday “in a free and democratic atmosphere without foreign influence,” Frattini said in a statement released by the Italian foreign ministry.
The FM also hoped that constitutional institutions would “function in an atmosphere of full cooperation” and different political forces would cooperate under President Michel Suleiman in the aftermath of Sunday’s elections.
The resumption of national dialogue among Lebanese leaders would be a sign that there are “efforts to improve the bases of stability and democracy in Lebanon,” the statement added.
