Hariri Ready to Serve Lebanon Supports Amending Presidential Powers

Al-Mustaqbal Movement leader MP Saad Hariri said that following the parliamentary elections he plans to sit with his parliamentary bloc and evaluate the elections outcome, and if asked to head cabinet he would do so to serve Lebanon and support amending presidential powers.

In a Television interview with the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) on Thursday evening, Hariri said: “if the opposition wins the election, they have the democratic right to form a government. This is our demand that democracy is to be applied.”

“Following elections end we shall sit with our allies and see how government should be formed and headed by whom,” Hariri said emphasizing that he is willing to serve Lebanon.

He went further to stress his support to amending presidential powers saying the concept of veto power given to the opposition at the Doha agreement has failed. Hariri said that President Michel Suleiman should enjoy this veto power and balance the scales between both March 8 and 14 forces.

“We don’t want veto [cabinet] powers, or a tripartite, we want equal power sharing. Veto powers is another form of a tripartite,” he said.

Hariri refused to comment on the Der Spiegel story, which directed an accusation against Hizbullah in the 2005 assassination of his father ex-premier Rafik Hariri saying: “This is sedition, I only accept the ruling of the Special Tribunal.”

He added that Hizbullah made a mistake in the way he received the four generals following their release from prison last May.

Hariri added that he has no qualms about holding a meeting with Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayed Hassan Nasarallah following the legislative elections.

“Let the Lebanese decide what they want on June 7. They heard our speeches and those by the other side. We shall respect the voter’s decision,” Hariri said.
