Army and Security Forces Control Electoral Security
Lebanese army and Internal Security Forces are implementing a large scale security plan coinciding with the 2009 election. A Lebanese military source told the daily As-Safir on Saturday that the army has began a large scale deployment operation throughout the republic that include strict measures to ensure a safe election on Sunday.
The military source affirmed that the army is on alert and fully capable of imposing security in any portion of Lebanon. He added that over 40,000 troops are now deployed outside their military bases all tasked with maintaining security.
15,000 Internal Security Forces are also deployed to aid the army in their common task, the source said.
On Friday Army Commander Jean Qahwaji called on all military leaders in all regions to be in ‘full alert” in marinating law and order against all those that breach it.
“You have 48 hours, no one is allowed to sleep, your eyes should remain open in securing the [parliamentary] elections and ensuring security for all Lebanese,” Qahwaji said.
